This triple chocolate layer cake is the ultimate celebration dessert. Three layers of moist chocolate cake, sandwiched together with the silkiest chocolate fudge frosting, and topped with chocolate shavings. It’s pure chocolate heaven.
Ingredients — Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup hot coffee
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Ingredients — Frosting
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
- Whisk together dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Beat until combined.
- Stir in hot coffee (batter will be thin — that’s normal!).
- Divide batter among the three pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool completely before frosting.
- For the frosting: Beat butter until fluffy, then add powdered sugar, cocoa, cream, vanilla, and salt. Beat until smooth and spreadable.
- Frost between layers and over the entire cake. Top with chocolate shavings.
This cake can be made a day ahead and stored in the fridge. Let it come to room temperature for 30 minutes before serving for the best texture and flavor.
